View Traditional Houses - Kalamoti in a larger map

map

Apart from the great, lovely, friendly and accessible on foot “Komi” beach that is just 1km away from the traditional houses, you can also enjoy Mavra Volia (Black Stones), a beach of unique beauty, which is a few meters away (1500 meters).

For those wanting more remote and quiet beaches, on the southwest coast of the island you can enjoy Vroulidia and Karinta -where there are bars as well as the beaches of Kato Fana, Salagona, Agia Dynami, Apothika and Trahili. You may once want to go out on a longer excursion, so as to discover the original landscape at the north of the island with forests, springs and small villages perched high up in the mountains.

Your acquaintance with the northern part of the island is better to be done in two visits. On your first one, starting from Kalamoti village and reaching the town of Chios, you may follow the route Vrontados- Lagada- Kardamyla- Marmaro- Amades- Viki- Kampia- Fyta- Kipouries- Katavasi. From here you can return either from the western or the central route. On your second visit you may follow the route Armolia-Vessa (a picturesque square suitable for coffee) – Lithi (on the beach there are the familiar fish taverns) – Avgonyma (there is a tavern called “Asteri” with a magnificent view) - Anavatos (a renovated stone village of unique architecture, built on the top of a cliff) – Sidirounta (on your way back you can enjoy here the spectacular sunset in the Aegean sea) – Volissos (with the wonderful cool beaches of Magemena, Managros and Lefkadia, where there are bars). Nearby, you will come across the historic monastery of Ag. Markella.

After wandering all day long, you may return back to your warm, quiet and safe space for relaxation and meditation. On your terrace or at the barbecue place, you can enjoy your coffee, drink, reading or music.

The quiet evenings are ideal for a stroll at Komi beach, where you can enjoy your dinner with fresh fish by the sea, at Karavelas tavern. Otherwise, if you prefer a more crowded place, you can sit at the taverns and bars in the middle of the beach. If you are filled of the sea, you might have a walk at Kalamoti village, where you can make your purchases at local shops and taste souvlaki or the local dishes of Kyra-Despoina, at her picturesque tavern. You can also take refreshments at the cafeterias of the square. If you are in a mood to go a little further at the fishing village of Kataraktis, the family tavern of Kyra-Dafni, called “Drosia”, will welcome you with fresh fish and unique appetizers. At the village of Nenita, which is next to Kataraktis village, you can try delicious and cheap dishes at the restaurant of Artemis.

It may be a pleasant experience for you to join one of the small feasts, celebrated in honor of a Saint at the local churches. After the mess, small dishes, ouzo, soft drinks and sweets are offered to the attendees. If you want to know where and when these events take place as well as the schedule of the island guided tours, you can get informed by the bulletin board at the barbecue area. It would be also useful to know that the surrounding hills are full of walking trails, which are crossing the lands filled with mastic trees and gardens. On your short morning or evening walks, you can visit some medieval villages of the island such as Kalamoti, Pyrgi, Olympoi, Mesta and the Cave of Olympoi.
